Obama Held Secret Talks With Gorbachev

That's so on the money! Putrid is so right, that's precisely where the old Soviet Union economy was when Gorby saw the writing on the wall and jumped head-long to make sure he could save the pre-Soviet borders by hugging the enemy instead of taking up arms against it.

Reagan was merely the "cushion" the old comrades back in Moscow needed to ensure that the fall from their over-hyped status as a co-equal superpower could get a soft landing. Instead, Reagan left the old Soviet regime survive in the transmogrified form we know today - the Putinocracy! He should've kept the pressure on to ensure the germination of a more friendly regime - but blew that opportunity.

The scariest part, however, is still a mystery to me. After spending trillions on intelligence, both in the military and civilian (CIA) branches, the Americans couldn't see this coming from a thousand miles? What does that say about our intelligence apparatus? It was either incompetent, deceitful (ergo in bed with the Military Industrial Complex) or both - I tend to think it was the later. Sure, there were good foot soldiers in these branches at that time, but the top brass figured out a long time ago that we needed the Soviet bogeyman more than they needed us to ensure the survival of the complex - how sad!
